It’s probably true that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Both “art”, in the conventional and limited sense of a person with a paintbrush and easel, and photography have borrowed from one another for ages. It is not surprising and, of course, one sees collages combining photographs and conventional painting – and often much else besides. Paradoxically perhaps, technology facilitates this process.
This bare bones introduction to what is undoubtedly a rich field of study and investigation is prompted by a set of photographs by an Australian photographer, Bill Gekas, in which his 5 year-old daughter served as a model for staged photographs simulating famous classical paintings.
I found them absolutely delightful but it is a measure of my ignorance (and perhaps failing memory) that I could not really confidently identify by name the precise painting involved even though most seemed awfully familiar. So I am calling on my better informed readers for assistance. I see Vermeer and Gainsborough but then my meagre pool of information deserts me!
